LIVING IN SPAIN
Thousands of people come to live in
Spain every year. Why? Apart from the obvious advantages of getting away from the English
weather, there are many other reasons:
1. Cost of living:
The cost of living in Spain (even on the
expensive coast) is much less than in England. For example, car tax for a
smallish car is currently 51 euros per year. A good meal for two with drinks, a bottle of
Rioja, including tips and VAT is rarely more than 30 euros. A litre bottle of gin is still
(even after euro inflation) only 4 euros. Rates on a cortijo often reach the heady heights
of 40 euros per year. Petrol currently runs at 82 centimos, diesel at 70 centimos.
2. Peace and quiet:
This area of Spain is incredibly peaceful. There
are hundreds of miles of walks, or hacks if you are an equestrian where you will meet
no-one. There are no traffic jams, roads are maintained in excellent condition, and the
air is as pure as it is possible to get.
3. Activities
There is plenty to do in Spain. Apart from
visiting some of the most interesting historical towns and cities in the world (Granada,
Córdobes, Jaen, Múrcia Almería etc.) there are the watersports associated with the
coast such as scuba diving, water ski-ing, sailing as well as learning to fly light
aircraft / microlights, horseriding, walking, ski-ing (2 hours distant).
4.Living:
Many people are very happy just to be in their
cortijo, gardening, restoring or just enjoying the weather (Almeria is the sunniest place
in Europe).
